Review: Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan

Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, #1)
by Rick Riordan
Published by Puffin
Paperback (purchased)
Young Adult, fantasy, mythology

Magnus Chase has always been a troubled kid. Since his mother's mysterious death, he's lived alone on the streets of Boston, surviving by his wits, keeping one step ahead of the police and the truant officers.
One day, he's tracked down by an uncle he's never met - a man his mother claimed was dangerous. His uncle tells him an impossible secret: Magnus is the son of a Norse god.
The Viking myths are true. The gods of Asgard are preparing for war. Trolls, giants and worse monsters are stirring for doomsday. To prevent Ragnarok, Magnus must search the Nine Worlds for a weapon that has been lost for thousands of years.
When an attack by fire giants forces him to choose between his own safety and the lives of hundreds of innocents, Magnus makes a fatal decision.
Sometimes, the only way to start a new life is to die . . .

The Sword of Summer was one of the most hilarious books I've ever read - it had so many funny moments and the chapter titles are the best ever. I shouldn't have been surprised because it's Riordan, who always deliveries hilarious lines and sarcastic characters. This time, however, he outdid himself.

Magnus was my favourite character; he's sarcastic and funny and armed with comebacks that are golden. Blitz and Hearth were so Magnus's homeless friends (sort of) and they were so funny and cute and nice, and I just really liked them. And true Riordan style the gods were absolutely hilarious and had weird obsessions. Thor especially was so funny. Sam was the only one I didn't really connect with but that's not to say that she was a bad character.

Basically, the book is everything that Percy Jackson series is and then some. It's no surprise that I loved it, Riordan's books are genius and brilliant and so hilarious. I definitely recommend this to everyone!
