(Apocalypse Assassins Trilogy #1)
Publication date: March 28th 2017
Genres: New Adult, Paranormal, Post-Apocalyptic
For trained assassin Dylan Romero, business is good. As the agency’s top warriors, he and partner Jake Walker are the last two people evil wants to see on the other side of a gun.
When a mission takes them to the college town of Bozeman, Montana, they discover that there is more than just another mark in another town to keep them there. With a heavy concentration of vessels doing their demon masters’ dirty work and flesh-craving monsters lurking around every corner, the secluded Midwest town is set to become the first battleground of the apocalypse.
The last thing Dylan needs is a distraction. With the fate of the world at stake, the life of one girl shouldn’t matter – until the day she changes everything.

EXCERPT:
Seconds later, the bartender set two matching drinks on the counter in front of the guy from the parking lot.

He wordlessly slid one of the glasses toward me. My eyes darted to his in surprise, and he shrugged. “You look thirsty.”

I picked up the glass with a grateful smile, and helped myself to a sip of the cool liquid. Jack and Coke—exactly what I wanted. He was observant. “Thank you.”

As he nodded, his eyes moved over my shoulder, in the general vicinity of Vivian. A small grin tugged at the corner of his lips. He glanced up at me briefly before giving undivided attention to his drink. “How’s your boyfriend?”

“Who? You mean the guy from earlier?”

“Well, I’m not talking about him.” His head nodded across the bar, where David was doing his best to catch the waitress’s attention. “That poor fucker doesn’t stand a chance, does he?”

“David is my friend,” I responded defensively. “And Kyle isn’t my boyfriend. You’re wrong on both counts.”

His eyes snapped to mine, then slowly lowered. Heat followed his gaze as it swept across my lips before settling on my neck. I was forced to sweep the hair off my shoulders in an attempt to cool off. It didn’t help.

He squinted at my neck like he considered devouring me right then and there. With the hot ball of lava tumbling through me, and ultimately settling in my core, I considered letting him. One look. That was all it took.

No guy had ever . . .

Oh, God. Vivian was totally right.

His mouth curved like he had read my thoughts. Then his hand shot out to mine as he stated, “Dylan.”

I accepted his hand with a smile. “Thea.”

His head angled closer to mine. “Thea?” When I nodded, he leaned back with a smirk. “Are you a librarian, or something?”

“What?” I demanded, suddenly on edge.

“Hot librarian,” he corrected with a lazy shrug, as if that somehow made his comment less insulting. At my unamused glare, he used his hand to cover the smile spreading across his face, and muttered, “I’m sorry. I don’t think I’ve ever met a Thea before. It’s, uh . . .”

“A librarian’s name, apparently,” I finished for him sourly.

He chuckled. “I like it, alright? I do. In fact, you’ve given me a new standard to associate with the name Thea. Next time I hear it, I won’t imagine a ninety-year-old librarian. I’ll picture you instead.”

He somehow made me like the sound of him thinking about me, despite the example he used. Some small, gullible part of me liked it. The rest of me reared back with revulsion.

“Need to picture me to get you through the night, huh?” I quipped.

His lips pursed as he considered my question. Then a broad grin turned his lips up. “Never really gone for a good girl before. Unless it’s an act . . .” His eyes swept down the length of me with obvious interest, and I folded my arms over my chest to interrupt his uncensored gaze. When he finally made it back to my eyes, he hooked an inquisitive brow.

“It’s not an act,” I stated firmly, “and I don’t play games.”

He shook his head at the counter, and muttered, “I didn’t think so.”

“Not like it would matter anyway.” My eyes lowered to his lap in mock consideration, then to the drink in front of him. “You’ve had so many of those, I doubt you could even play your part at this point.”

Dylan’s head rolled back as a deep laugh rumbled through him. I refused to acknowledge how sexy it sounded.

“First of all . . .” He lifted a finger in the air. “I’m always up to playing my part. Got it?” I kept my arms folded, my face unreadable, as he lifted another finger. “Secondly . . . I find it interesting that you know how much I’ve had to drink tonight.”

My arms slowly uncrossed under his amused and knowing gaze. His eyebrows shot up in silent inquiry, and when I offered no explanation, his grin broadened.

“I thought so.” With a flirty wink, he turned in his seat to face the bar.

This week's cannot-wait book is:

The Love Interest
by Cale Dietrich
Published by Feiwel & Friends
Expected publication: May 16th, 2017
YA, LGBT, contemporary

There is a secret organization that cultivates teenage spies. The agents are called Love Interests because getting close to people destined for great power means getting valuable secrets.
Caden is a Nice: The boy next door, sculpted to physical perfection. Dylan is a Bad: The brooding, dark-souled guy, and dangerously handsome. The girl they are competing for is important to the organization, and each boy will pursue her. Will she choose a Nice or the Bad?
Both Caden and Dylan are living in the outside world for the first time. They are well-trained and at the top of their games. They have to be – whoever the girl doesn’t choose will die.
What the boys don’t expect are feelings that are outside of their training. Feelings that could kill them both.

This sounds like it's going to be so unique, because how it seems to flip the usual YA contemporary cliches. I can't wait for this, I need it like right now!

Top Ten Tuesday: Books That Made Me Read The Whole Day Away

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week participating bloggers can create lists of topic given by the host, and share them with others!

These are all books I devoured; I'm not the fastest reader so most of them still took over a day to read, especially since I rarely have time to devote a whole day for reading. All of them, however, are very captivating and just generally made me want to be able to read them on a one sitting (and mostly I thought about them the every second I wasn't able to read).

Review: The Fever Code by James Dashner

The Fever Code (The Maze Runner, #0.6)
by James Dashner
Published by Chicken House
Hardcover (purchased)
YA, dystopia, sci-fi

The world has ended: the earth is scorched, and fever rages through the population. Out of the chaos, a boy emerges with the power to change everything: Thomas. This is the start of his story. An electrifying Maze Runner prequel, The Fever Code holds all the answers: How did WICKED find the Gladers? Who are Group B? Whose side are Thomas and Teresa really on? Lies will be exposed. Secrets uncovered. Loyalties proven. You'll never see the truth coming...

Note to other readers, please don't read this book before the original trilogy, because this is basically full of spoilers.

I read the original Maze Runner trilogy years ago and absolutely loved it; The Fever Code is something I've been waiting for years.

I was both pleased and disappointed with this one. I mean, I got to know the origin stories of the characters I fell in love so long ago: Thomas, Newt, Minho, Chuck, Alby and many others. The story offered even bigger insight of WICKED (which is just that they are all bad and screwed up for doing all this and you can't convince me otherwise). Some parts really broke my heart, especially the beginning with Thomas's childhood and how WICKED treated the young Gladers. But oh my did I love all the scenes with the Glader gang, and to see how their friendship was build. How Newt has always been so adorable, how Minho had probably the most fight in him, how Chuck was always the adorable little brother, and everything. Just everything. Although, I wanted to smack Thomas a few times because he had a tendency to be a bit naive when it came to certain things.

The only thing I could have done without was Teresa. I despised her from the very beginning, since I read The Maze Runner, and this just cemented my hate for her. The level of hate I have for Teresa as a character is the same level with Dolores Umbridge, and I just hate her with everlasting passion. Teresa was rude, boring and just downright wicked.

The first half of the story was really good, it had answers and actions and heartbreak, but then it slowed a bit too much. The middle was mostly boring, especially since it mainly included only Thomas and Teresa, and nothing happened. The last hundred pages or so picked up nicely again.

Overall, I liked The Fever Code, but I can't help but be a little disappointed because of the boring middle bit and how much focus there was on Teresa at times when I was interested in everything else. Would I recommend it? Yes, if you're a fan of the trilogy, then yes.

Review: Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

Nimona
by Noelle Stevenson
Published by Harper Voyager
Paperback (purchased)
Graphic Novel, Young Adult, Fantasy

Nemeses! Dragons! Science! Symbolism! All these and more await in this brilliantly subversive, sharply irreverent epic from Noelle Stevenson. Featuring an exclusive epilogue not seen in the web comic, along with bonus conceptual sketches and revised pages throughout, this gorgeous full-color graphic novel is perfect for the legions of fans of the web comic and is sure to win Noelle many new ones.
Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren't the heroes everyone thinks they are.
But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona's powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.

Nimona's reckless, shapeshifting sidekick with thirst for blowing stuff up and killing heroes. I didn't click with her for some reason and I found her a bit annoying at the beginning. However, I absolutely fell in love with the supervillain, Lord Ballister Blackheart, and his nemesis Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin. Ballister is a villain with morals and he's basically a huge science nerd which was so adorable. Ambrosius is an Institution trained hero with lots of morals and soft spot (love) for Ballister. Their banter, fights, and rulers for fighting is hilarious and adorable; I spend the whole comic shipping them because they are fated.

I wouldn't mind a sequel with more Ballister and Ambrosius, and cameo from Nimona.

Nimona is an action packed and fun graphic novel, which I definitely recommend to check out and read. The art is beautiful and the story is brilliant. There is plenty of villainous plans, fighting against the Institution, blowing up things, and friendships.

I'm terrible following up with any kind of TBRs but I like doing these season TBR lists. So there's a huge possibility that I read only a third of these books or half (most likely I won't read them all during spring), but I'll try!

ARC Review: Wake Up Call by JL Merrow

Wake Up Call (Porthkennack, #1)
by JL Merrow
Published by Riptide Publishing
eARC (received via NetGalley)
Adult, LGBT, contemporary, romance

South London mechanic Devan Thompson has gone to Porthkennack to track down someone he’s been waiting all his life to know. But Dev’s distracted from his quest by Kyle, a broodingly handsome local of only a few months, who’s already got a reputation as an alcoholic because of his strange behaviour—including a habit of collapsing in the street.
Kyle Anthony fled to Porthkennack to escape from the ruins of his life. Still raging against his diagnosis of narcolepsy—a condition that’s cost him his job as a barrister, his lover, and all chance of normality—the last thing he wants is another relationship that’s doomed to fail. But Dev’s easy-going acceptance and adaptability, not to mention his good looks, have Kyle breaking all his self-imposed rules.
When disaster strikes Dev’s adored little sister, Kyle steps up to the plate, and Dev sees a side of his lover he wasn’t prepared for: competent, professional—and way out of Dev’s league. With one man determined that they don’t have a future, and the other fearing it, life after Porthkennack is starting to look bleak for both of them.

Porthkennack is a fictional town in Cornish seaside with rich history - the setting for this novel was absolutely brilliant because how the atmosphere transferred to the story. Even more brilliant was how authentic the story was; the characters actually spoke with local accents, especially Dev who was from South London and had a thick accent. It did get a bit used to because there were some words and sayings I wasn't familiar with, but it really did a lot for the story which I admired a lot. Overall I just really loved to read a book set in England.

Wake Up Call was a touching story with a hints of sadness, sweetness, and coming to terms with both health and family issues. Dev, twenty-four years old motor mechanic from London, went to Porthkennack for a three week holiday and for a quest to find his birth mother. He met there some interesting people, including Kyle who used to be a criminal attorney in London before he was diagnosed with narcolepsy with catalepsy. Kyle's mostly isolated himself because of the narcolepsy but Dev's determined and he has a heart in a right place even if he sometimes said things he didn't mean in the heat of the moment. Kyle and Dev were just so adorable and hot together that I couldn't get enough of their interactions and conversations. Character wise the only complain I have was that Dev's friend, Mal, was introduced so late. He was hilarious and I'd liked to see more of him.

I just wished more Dev and Kyle moments at the end; the ending was a bit abrupt and the epilogue didn't satisfy me enough. Otherwise I really liked Wake Up Call.
